Game Fishing Classic 2012

Congratulations and well done to all the anglers, skippers and crew who took part in the very first and very successful Lady Fishers Game Fishing Classic held on the Gold Coast March 2012 and what a fantastic event it was. With torrential rain, flooding and high winds in the weeks leading up to the tournament, we were nervously watching the weather patterns and hoping for calm seas.

It seemed as if someone had been watching over us, the wind dropped, the sun came out and we were blessed with a perfect day.  The next two days during the ATAS tournament the weather turned nasty again and the same boats that had fished the Lady Fishers tournament the day before now had to do battle with rain, wind and very rough seas.

This year was the first time it has rained during the tournament since it began and it certainly made up for lost time.  With all the flooding in the towns from the continual rains during the year, we had a very wet and soggy event. The dam was overflowing with many barra being washed over the dam wall and into the Boyne River below.

The rains stopped for a short time on the first morning which gave the girls time to participate in the Sailpast, without spoiling all their wonderful costumes and decorations which they put so much time and effort into. This year the theme for the tournament was ‘The Mad Hatters Party” and the Sailpast was really exceptional. One of the new teams this year had the tea party set up on their boat and the winning team had made a huge effort with a complete farmyard scene.

The captures speak for themselves.  The girls had a great time with 19 top quality Barra between them.  The top scoring fish measuring 111 cm was caught by Judy Cox.

Out of the 19 Barra, 4 measured over 100 cm, 10 over 90 cm and 5 over 79 cm.  There were also a lot of hard luck stories of monster Barra that had straightened out trebles and others dropped at the side of the boat.

Each year there is a different theme for the tournament. This year the theme was ‘Tropical Queensland’ and the Sailpast was really exceptional. There were boats decorated with palm trees, crocodiles and mermaids.  One boat had an inflated shark towed behind it.  One of the new teams this year was decorated as “Priscilla Queen of the Desert with the skipper in tights and a wig”.  The girls really enjoyed themselves and they were a ton of fun over the tournament.

With the fishing a lot slower than in the previous year where the ladies were treated to several metre plus barramundi captures, most of which were their personal best and for others their first ever barramundi. This year it was a hard fought tournament with two teams battling it out in the last hours of the tournament with only centimetres dividing the winning teams. Sheila Challacombe from team 'Daze Off' was the first angler to have a fish on the brag mat measuring 83 cm.

The camaraderie between the girls is very inspiring. You know when an angler has landed a fish from the cheers and congratulations coming from the surrounding boats and the more experienced anglers freely giving information and tips to the less experienced anglers who were finding the going tough. This is what makes it such an enjoyable time for the newcomers and although they may have arrived with very little knowledge, they went home with new found knowledge and a really memorable experience.

The briefing is the social event of the weekend, it's a chance for everyone to catch up from previous comps and mingle in a relaxed atmosphere. We will kick off a little earlier next year with the workshops on knots and rigs and casting starting at 1pm in the afternoon to provide the social gathering and pick up a few pointers and then onto the briefing at 6pm. We will have a slide show of this year's hilarious events and great captures to show the newcomers what to expect and to have a great laugh at our own expense. It certainly provided a lot of entertainment this year.
